The African-American Spirituality Dialogue:
Gathering of the Sages
The Gathering of the Sages is hosted by the University of Indianapolis. The purpose of the gathering is to listen to the wisdom of our elders, to engage in dialogue and learning about Africa, African spirituality, and how our past calls us into our future. This is a conversation that guides us into the heart of African-American spirituality. Our time will lead us to discover, discern, and reclaim our roots.
The basic format includes:
- Formal presentations
- Multi-media presentations
- Dialogue
- Dance, music, drumming, art
- Small group interaction
- Sharing of resources, materials, programs
These are community events. Congregations, students, pastors, leaders, teachers, and community residents are invited attend, participate, learn, and contribute to this ongoing dialogue. The first Gathering of the Sages took place in February 2005 as part of the Annual Showers Lectures at the University if Indianapolis.
