Prayers for Encouragement

The Stories

Prayers for Encouragement was initially printed in English, French, Portuguese, Kiswahili, Xhosa, and Spanish. Since the initial printing, we've added editions in Korean, Zulu, Setswana, Afrikaans, Sesotho, and Burmese. Translations are underway in Japanese and IsiZulu. The Upper Room's initial commitment is to translate and print 1 million copies of this small booklet in as many languages as possible. Your contribution will help us reach our goal (Designate your gift to "HIV/AIDS Prayer Booklet.") Give now.

Here are some stories about how the booklet is being used:

  • The Anglican Church in Tanzania requested 5,000 copies in Kiswahili which are being distributed by youth of the church in their ongoing ministry with persons living with HIV and AIDS.
  • After watching a South African national television interview, a station commander of the Kraaifontein Police Station in South Africa called requesting multible copies of the booklet for prisoners in jail in that facility. Demonstrating care for inmates is rare, so the call was received with deep appreciation and understanding of God's moving in the life of this officer.
  • Bishop Paul Verryn of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa found the booklet to be of such value that he has endorsed the entire initiative, urging churches in his area to get involved in the HIV and AIDS ministry and to distribute as many booklets as they can;
  • The booklet is being distributed by South African Emergency Chaplain's service to fire departments, police services, security companies, private ambulance services, and various private hospital staffs.
  • The PPK (Afrikaans Protestant church), west Gauteng region, South Africa, is distributing the booklet to those working in the mines.
  • Four United States United Methodist annual conferences highlighted the project in their 2007 conference sessions. These were the Virginia, New Jersey, West Ohio, and Dakotas conferences. Almost 13,000 booklets were distributed to delegates who were encouraged to share them with HIV and AIDS ministries. In addition, the Virginia Annual Conference produced both a large-type and a Braille edition of the book.
  • Prayers for Encouragement is highlighted on World Malaria Day (April 25) at a press conference also featuring Nothing But Nets. Learn more.
