DEVO OF THE WEEK
A Big Dream
Jesus calls Peter to follow him. Check out the fisherman’s story in Luke 5:1–11.
I love the story in which Peter, the roughneck Galilean fisherman, first realizes that Jesus rules the seas on which he has fished all his life. At Jesus’ command, Peter casts his nets into the sea, even though he has fished all night without success. This time, however, he catches so many fish that his nets begin to break. Peter falls on his knees and worships Jesus as Lord, and Jesus invites Peter to be one of his disciples.
Growing up in a loving, Christian home, I always knew that Jesus was God. But it wasn’t until I was a teenager that Jesus Christ touched my life and I fell at his feet and worshiped him as Lord of my life. I have a lot of smaller dreams -- to write a bestseller, to have a family -- but one big dream unites them all: I want God to use me where I am, as Jesus used Peter.
At times, I lose sight of this big dream. I think that God can’t use me unless I follow a particular course in life or that I have to do some “great thing” for God, such as become a missionary. Yet whenever I have these thoughts, God reaches down and stirs the waters of my soul, gently reminding me that the Lord of all my gifts and dreams can use me right now, right where I am. <
