The four great medallions represent four events of the early church. The first event is the gathering of the disciples and their receiving the Holy Spirit.

The second large medallion depicts Peter preaching on the Day of Pentecost. The story of his sermon is also told in adjacent sections of the window.

The third large medallion is a picture of Peter and John at the Beautiful Gate. They received power to heal, and the lame man was enabled to walk.

The fourth large medallion shows the disciples as they went forth to be witnesses of the Holy Spirit.

About the Window

Depicted in the window are Christian Witnesses from the early days of the Christian faith to the twentieth century.

Near the top of the window is the figure of Barnabas and, on the right side, St. Augustine. Below Barnabas is St. Bernard of Clairvaux, and below St. Augustine is St. Francis of Assisi.

Other figures represented in the window are George Fox, the Quaker; Martin Luther, the father of the Reformation; Isaac Watts and Charles Wesley, hymn writers; John Bunyan, Roger Williams, and Samuel Davies, champions of religious liberty; John Wesley, Johnathan Edwards, George Whitefield, Phillips Brooks, and Alexander Campbell, pioneer bishops; and also Florence Nightingale and George Washington Carver upon whom the Spirit of God descended in nursing and science. The smaller center medallion at the bottom shows John R. Mott, devoted layperson and the founder of many Christian youth movements.

The Window pictures many symbols of Christ. There is also a complete set of symbols of the apostles, with one for Matthias in the place of Judas Iscariot.
